I'm linking to the RAW again, because I really don't know what Viz was doing, disappearing important words like "father" from the picture. So! Shinji-kun is the Commander's son; presumably Commander Ikari, the man who still "found Kaji useful" in the last memory. Poor Shinji, with a father like that. Apparently, Shinji is an Eva pilot, and Evas are somehow similar to "Adam," from what he gathered in the last memory. And they can be piloted, somehow.
Other than that... Children getting hurt in the line of duty, employed as pilots and treated as criminals? Unit-01? Rei? Third child? Dummy plug? Ah, the world of memories without context.
